Yamanote 3D - 山手線

One loop. Thirty stations. No objective.

A contemplative browser ride on Tokyo's Yamanote Line: you are a passenger on a JR East E235 series train, going round the thirty-station loop in near real time - about sixty-seven minutes a lap. Nothing to win, nothing to score. Walk the carriage, sit down, watch the city drift past, listen to the announcements and the departure melodies.

This project took more than 50 hours of research and over 100 hours of work.

On board

• Walk the carriage in first person, sit down on a seat, or hold a strap.
• Step off through an open door and stay on the platform: the train leaves without you, and the next one comes about two minutes later.
• Hear announcements and 発車メロディ departure melodies in Japanese and English for all thirty stations and both directions - 内回り and 外回り.
• Pick the date and time before boarding: the season colours the trees, the sun follows the hour, and the weather changes the journey.
• Talk to fellow passengers. The interface is available in English, French, and Japanese.

Data and privacy

• No cookies, no advertising, no third-party trackers. Nothing is sold, shared, or profiled.
• Your preferences (language, version, graphics and audio quality) stay on your own device and are never sent anywhere.
• Visits are counted anonymously. A visible tab reports every five minutes: a random tab identifier that only lives in memory, the device type, the interface language, and the version you are playing. No IP address, no referrer, no cookie. Nothing is stored on your device, so returning visitors cannot be recognised: the site counts sessions, not people. Records are kept at most 400 days.
• If you join a shared ride, the nickname you type and your position in the carriage are sent to the other travellers in that room, and nothing is kept once the room closes.
• The site is served by GitHub Pages and the counters run on Supabase; like any web host, both see your IP address in their own server logs.
